Housing agency files complaints about ads called discriminatory
Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia Inc. has filed 20 housing discrimination complaints against people who posted online ads that may violate fair-housing laws.
Some of the ads offered free or reduced-cost housing, such as a room in a house or apartment, in exchange for sex. Some stated a preference for women, younger people or for a particular race.
The complaints, filed with state and federal government housing agencies, maintain ads discriminated based on gender, race, color and national origin.
“Housing providers of this size can in fact under law restrict who they rent to,” explained Amy S. Nelson, HOME director of systemic investigations and enforcement.
